Capitol Police Close Public Access to Senate Plaza

Federal legislators were shaken after the assassination of a politician in Minnesota.

Capitol Police have closed the Senate plaza to the public during this week’s session after the murder of Minnesota state Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) discovered the killer compiled “voluminous writings” with a hit list of 45 legislators. The FBI successfully apprehended the suspected assassin after two days, for which U.S. Representative Greg Landsman is grateful.

“On Sunday morning, Capitol Police contacted my office to inform me that the FBI had found my name among the evidence collected during the search for a suspect in Minnesota — who is accused of murdering and seriously injuring lawmakers,” Congressman Landsman stated. “We are relieved the suspect has been arrested.”

Senator Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, who was also on the killer’s hit list, urged her colleagues to boost security for Congressional legislators and to tone down messaging that can encourage this violent behavior.

“I want to hear recommendations on improving security … but I think both with the president and his administration and with members of Congress, that we need to bring the temperature down,” Senator Baldwin said Monday.

As the Lord Leads, Pray with Us…

  • For God’s protection over the members of the Senate as they hold this week’s session.
  • For Capitol Police as they seek to ensure the safety of federal legislators.
